Men’s Therapy FAQs
Is therapy only for people in crisis?
Definitely not! Therapy is for anybody who is motivated to improve his quality of life by doing interior work. In many cases, addressing difficulties head-on with therapy can help avoid crises surfacing in the future.
I’ve never been to therapy before. What should I expect?
The movies have it wrong: there are no lie-down chairs, no bright interrogation lights, no proverbial microscopes, and no unwelcome pressure. What you can expect is frank conversations with someone trained to help you, in a comfortable, low-anxiety space. At your pace, we’ll explore together what is bringing you to therapy, and we’ll create a concrete, actionable plan to help change the patterns that are causing you difficulty.
Can therapy help with stress and burnout?
Yes. Various models of therapy have been shown in scientific studies time and again to be effective in treating stress and burnout, and we’ve seen the success ourselves, over and over.
Can therapy help with anger?
Yes. If you’re asking this question, you’ve probably come to believe that the emotion of anger is damaging or bad, or you’ve seen your own anger cause harm to yourself or others. What if we told you that anger is a neutral, maybe even good, emotion when it is properly channeled, and its underlying causes are brought to light? We can help with that.
How do I know if I need therapy?
Do you feel like you’re getting by, but not really thriving? Do you feel tired of that thing that you can’t let go of, that’s making you irritable, or that you’re avoiding? Do you wish things were different, but you’re not really sure where to start? If you answered yes to any of these, then therapy will likely be beneficial to you.
Can counseling improve my relationships?
It definitely can. Relationships start in the minds and hearts of everybody involved, including you. If there’s something blocking your way to loving, stable relationships, then therapy can help figure out what that is and remove it. And if a relationship needs care specifically addressing what happens between you and your loved ones, we also offer couples and family therapy where you can come in and work on your relationship together.
Do men usually come alone to therapy, or with a partner?
Either or both, depending on what will be most beneficial to addressing eah man’s needs. If you aren’t certain which would be best for you, let’s schedule a consultation and we can see if starting individual or couples therapy is right for you.
How confidential is counseling?
Your information and experience in therapy is absolutely protected by law to be confidential. The only exception is that a therapist is legal obligated to report serious risk of harm to self or others, as well as harm to the vulnerable, such as children or the elderly. Otherwise, your counseling stays between us.
How long does therapy take?
Each session lasts about 50 minutes, typically weekly. The number of sessions depends on the goals we’re trying to achieve. Some people find relief from their difficulties in just six sessions, where as others do best with stable therapeutic support for longer spans of time. You may find, after accomplishing one goal in therapy, you’d like to continue to address another!
Do you offer virtual appointments?
We do! We offer both in-person and telehealth options for therapy. And you are not bound by one or the other: for example, if you find that in-person works for a while but you need to switch to telehealth, or you would like access to both options to best fit your schedule, we can accommodate that.
Should I see a male or female therapist?
This varies depending on you, what you’re bringing to therapy, and what will be most constructive to you. Many men find seeing a male therapist more comfortable and natural, but others do best accompanied by a female therapist. Both our male therapist, Braeden, and our female therapists would be happy to talk to you about what will work best for you.
What if I try it and it’s not for me?
That happens! There are a lot of factors that can make it not feel like the right fit. Most often it’s a matter of connecting to the right therapist: therapy is personal, so personality, connection, and professional specialty matter. If we discover that you would do best with another therapist, we can easily refer you and keep your hard work going. Our priority is your wellness: it won’t offend us if you decide it’s not the right fit!
